Eligibility Requirements
The NYC Department of Education will reimburse the college for the full cost of tuition through completion of the Master's Degree. The Scholarship Program does not pay for prerequisite credits. Other fees and expenses are not covered, and are the responsibility of the student.
Contractual Agreement
Scholarship Cohort Program entrants must sign a contract with the NYC Department of Education. In accepting the award, they accept the provisions of the contract, which include, but are not limited to, the following terms and conditions:
To be considered for acceptance into the Scholarship cohort program for the Summer 2007 semester, you must complete an online application at www.teachnycprograms.net and submit the requested documentation within 10 business days from the date the application was filed.

Eligibility Requirements
- Possession of a Bachelor's Degree.
- Cumulative undergraduate G.P.A. of at least 3.0. (GPAs slightly lower than 3.0 may be considered by submitting a letter of explanation).
- Must have completed a minimum of 12 credits in a language other than English.
- Proficiency in English and a language other than English.
- U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency status.
- A non-refundable application fee of $15.00 in the form of a Money Order made payable to the: New York City Department of Education.
- Two completed Recommendation Forms.
- Candidates are interviewed by the Office of Recruitment Scholarship and Incentive Programs and their selected college/university and must meet the program requirements for the Master's of Science degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.
- Eligible applicants will be required to complete a written assessment in English and/or the target language at the interview site.
- Current pedagogical or clinical employees of the NYC Department of Education are not eligible to participate in the Scholarship Cohort Program.
- Applicants who have already achieved NYS certification are not eligible to apply.
- If you have completed a master's degree in an educational program you are not eligible to participate in the scholarship program.

- Awardees have not participated in or benefited from any other incentive programs administered by the Department of Education (i.e., Career Training, Teaching Fellows, Teachers of Tomorrow, Conversion Program, Housing Program or Intensive Teaching Institute, etc.).
- Scholarship recipients must complete a minimum of 18 credits per year with a grade of B or better in each course.
- To meet New York State teaching certification requirements, participants are required to take and pass the Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST) and the Assessments of Teaching Skills-Written (ATS-W) during the first semester of the scholarship program.
- Participants must register and take the Content Specialty Test (CST) before they begin the second year of the program.
- Participants shall serve as New York State certified teachers of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) two (2) years for every year the Scholarship is awarded or any part thereof. Example: The Scholarship is awarded for one and a half year; the participant will owe four (4) years of service.
- Participants must successfully complete their student teaching in a New York City Public School facility.
